On November 4, 2023, the second race day of the Soon Series Day 2 took place after being rescheduled from its original date of October 14 due to unfavorable wind conditions. Last Saturday turned out to be an exceptional day for sailing, with perfect weather conditions and favorable gusts.

This race is part of the Grant Thornton Season Championship, which consist of 5 separate series: The Soons Series (2-days), the Aberson Series (1-day), The Multiclass Regatta (2 days), the Hoedemaker Series (2-days), the Hope Ross Series (2-days).

Sailors from different clubs, including Saint Martin Voile pour Tous, MDA, St. Barts Yacht Club, and the Sint Maarten Yacht Club, came together for an exciting day of racing. They competed in ILCA, Optimist, and Quest classes, with a total of five thrilling races, creating a nice and fun day for everyone.

After Soons Day 1 on September 30 and Soons Day 2, the overall results in the various classes are:

Emilien Le Normand secured first place in the ILCA class, with Rio Stomp taking second and Frits Bus finishing in third. These sailors showed consistency, as they also claimed the top three positions on race day one.

A total of 16 Optimist sailors participated in the Soons Series. After Soons Day 1 Thomas Magras was in first place in the Optimist Class, Sarah Michaux in second and Tao Carmona in third. All three of them managed to keep their position and secured the podium of the Soons Series.

For the Quest class, 4 teams participated in the Soons Series. After 2 race days, Janneke Arkesteijn and Astrid Maten ended up in first place! The Soons brothers joined the first race but couldn’t make it for day 2. Jorick Houwer and Rianne visser raced in the same boat on day 1 but showed up on day 2 with different race partner.

“Despite the postponement last month, a lot of sailors turned out for the second day of racing. We enjoyed great weather and fantastic sailing, making it a memorable experience for everyone.” Said Race Officer Wessel Tangenberg.

The results of the Soon Series were announced later that day, followed by a prize-giving ceremony, and posted on the Sint Maarten Yacht Club website. Pictures from the event can be found online.

Looking ahead, the next Dinghy Race of the Grant Thornton Dinghy Season Championship is scheduled for December 16th. On that Saturday we will combine Aberson day 1 and 2 into a full day of racing. Registration is open on the SMYC website.
