Veronica Destin competed together with Oskar Jarret Versteegden in the Fusion class during the Caribbean Dinghy Championship in Martinique. Veronica and Oskar traveled together with other team members to Martinique for a week, 3 days of practice and 3 days of racing. With no experience sailing together (normally Veronica sails in ILCA 4 and Oskar in Optimist) they made huge steps during the training period in Martinique, they have shown very impressive teamwork.

“ I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Garth Steyn from the Maritime School of the West Indies for his continuous belief in me and his financial support towards my participation in the 2023 Caribbean Dinghy Championship (CDC) in Schoelcher Martinique. I am thrilled to announce that thanks to Garth’s invaluable support I was allotted the opportunity to compete in the Fusion Class and I achieved a remarkable 2nd-place finish.

I have been sailing for 5 years at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. We don’t have the Fusion Class in Sint Maarten; however, it is comparable to our Zest class apart from the spinnaker. As the proud First Place winner of the first youth (Zest) class in the 2023 Sint Maarten Heineken Regatta, I was elated to represent the team and by extension my country Sint Maarten in the Fusion Class at the CDC championships in Schoelcher Martinique.

As a proud member of the SXM Sailing Team I would like to recognize Garth for his invaluable support that significantly influenced the St. Maarten’s Sailing Team in achieving a remarkable 3rd place in the Nations cup. On behalf of the Sint Maarten Sailing Team, The Sint Maarten Yacht Club, and by extension our country Sint Maarten you are appreciated for your continuous contribution to the development of sailing on our island. “ said Veronica Destin, SXM Racing Team member.
