On Saturday May 6th, the Grant Thornton Dinghy Season Championship came to an end with the last race day of racing. This Championship consisted of 5 two day – series: the Soons Series, the Aberson Series, the Multiclass Regatta, the Hoedemaker Series, and the Hope Ross Series with a total of 10 race days. Last Saturday the championship was concluded with the last race day of the last Series: Hope Ross race day 2.
The race was hosted by the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. Competitors from the racing team from the Friars Bay Sailing School; SMVT, and from the Saint Barth Yacht Club joined the race. A fantastic turnout with competitors competing in four classes: Optimist, Lasers, RS Zest, RS Quest.
“It was a great day of racing with good conditions. There was an abnormal wind direction which made the race exciting! It is always a great view to see a big group of eager competitors out on the water. Congratulations to all the winners from this Dinghy Season” said Grace, Sailing instructor and race officer at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club.
The overall results from the full series will be presented during the last racing weekend of this season, the Dinghy National Championship, June 3 and 4.
In total 18 competitors competed in the Optimist class. Lourenco Rolo Couto from the Saint Barth Yacht Club took third place. Sarah Michaux representing SMVT, took second place and Tao Carmona from Saint Barth Yacht Club took the win in the class!
In the laser class, 8 sailors competed for the win. In the end Emma Lennox from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club came third. Jordan Pieterse, as well from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club came second. Emilien le Normand from Voile de Friars Bay won the race in the Laser Class.
The RS Zest Class had 2 competitors, both from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club. The battle between Freek and Massimo continued on the second day of the series. Freek Redele came in second position and Massimo la Pierre won his class, with all races won on the second day. Congratulations!
The RS Quest class saw 3 competitors. Antonin Sciou and his crew couldn’t sail the second day of the series and ended up in second place, behind Paul Berlande Pages and crew who won the race in his class.
This race concluded with a fantastic Dinghy season. But not to worry because Sint Maarten Yacht Club will host the Dinghy National Championship on Saturday and Sunday, June 3 and 4, 2023.
This will be a 2-day standalone event on the Simpson Bay Lagoon. More information about this championship is on our website as well as pictures and results of the Hope Ross race day 2.
