The Sint Maarten Yacht Club is excited to announce its official Racing Team, consisting of talented young sailors from the Sint Maarten Yacht Club Sailing School. This team will be the next generation of sailors representing Sint Maarten on and off island. The Sint Maarten Yacht Club selected 12 sailors in 2 different boat classes: Optimist and ILCA (formerly known as Laser) to be part of this team.

The Optimist class is represented by the following young sailors:

  • Aden Stomp
  • Adilyn Treadwell
  • Axel vanden Eynde
  • Harper Treadwell
  • Nathan Sheppard
  • Oskar Jarrett Versteegden

The ILCA class is represented by the following young sailors:

  • Emma Lennox
  • Francener Faustin
  • Massimo Lapierre
  • Melina de Vries
  • Rio Stomp
  • Veronica Destin

Sam Peeks shares his enthusiasm for the racing team: “In the past 2 years being a coach at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club I have seen some great young talent sailing around in and around Sint Maarten. It is great that we now have a dedicated group of sailors willing to put a lot of time and effort into their passion. These sailors will have the chance to represent Sint Maarten in international regatta’s now and far into the future in bigger boats. I have no doubt they will represent Sint Maarten Yacht Club well with great sportsmanship and skill.”

Five of the racing team’s members may kick off right away with a trip to Martinique, to compete in the Caribbean Dinghy Championship from October 27th to 29th. The Sint Maarten Yacht Club staff and members wish Rio Stomp, Emma Lennox, Nathan Sheppard, Veronica Destin, and Oskar Jarrett Versteegden the best for a successful competition. We hope they come back with new skills they can share with their fellow team members and who knows, maybe a trophy.

Looking ahead, the SMYC Racing Teams have an exciting schedule, with several big events coming up, including the Curacao Youth Championships, Schoelcher Week in Martinique, and the Mini Bucket in St. Barts. In these races, our sailors get the opportunity to showcase their skills on an international stage. Apart from these bigger events you will see these sailors on the water every week, multiple times a week practicing and competing in local competitions.

The Sint Maarten Yacht Club invites everyone to follow and support our racing teams on their journey to success. Stay tuned for updates on our socials and website for their achievements and upcoming.
