The 6th edition of the Domino’s Interschool Sailing Championship took place on Sunday May 14. A total of 32 sailors in 26 boats, representing 7 schools took part in 5 races in the lagoon.

A total of 49 sailors in 33 boats, representing 11 schools took part in 5 races in the Simpson Bay Lagoon.

“This is great growth compared to last year, said Sam Peeks, Sailing Instructor at the SMYC. Last year 32 sailors participated. With growing our primary school sailing program, we created more interest for this annual school competition under all sailors in our program! All our boats were in use, we even had to add another fleet of boats, to facilitate all interested sailors!”

The sailors were representing the following schools: Sister Regina Primary School, Learning Unlimited, MPC, CIA, St. Dominic, Leonard Connor Primary School, All Children Educated foundation, 7th day Adventist Primary School, Victor Hugo, Ecole au bord de l’eau and a Homeschooled team.

In the morning the sailors started from the SMYC dock so that parents, schoolteachers, and spectators had first row seats to see the sailing competition. 3 races were sailed in the morning. After a well deserved lunch from Domino’s 2 more races were sailed.

In the Laser Class Jordan Pieterse scored a third place for the Homeschooled team. Emma Lennox came in second sailing for LU and Rio Stomp took the win in the Laser Class for MPC.

In the RS Zest Fleet Joseph and Lily came in third, sailing for St. Dominic. Freek and Isabeau scored points in second place, sailing for MPC and James and Arhan won the class, sailing for LU.
A special mention goes out to Deshawn and DJ, sailing for the All Children Educated Foundation, the newest school in SMYC’s Primary School Sailing Program and in the Domino’s Interschool Regatta.

The RS Quest class saw 4 competitors. A special mention goes to Misha, Sahana and Declan, sailing for LU, ending in 4th position. These sailors are at least 2 years younger than the rest of the fleet, but did great and even came in second place in the second race of the day. Well done! Maya and Wabi scored third position for MPC, Matthew and Louka won the last race of the day and came in second position overall, sailing for CIA. But it was Alex and Dax, sailing for MPC that took the convincing win in the class.

The Optimist Class saw 10 competitors this year. Aden Stomp finished in third position, sailing for Sister Regina Primary School. Oskar Versteegden finished in second position, sailing for the Sister Regina as well. First place went to Nathan Sheppard, sailing for Ecole au bord de l’eau, with all races won, great job!

New this year was the additional ‘SailQube fleet’. A SailQube is a plastic Optimist that is used by the SMYC to teach the young and beginning sailors in the Primary School Program. This way 5 additional boats were added to the regatta.
The Leonard Connor Primary School was represented by Ezekial and Luperalo who became 5th in this fleet. Benjamin and Acacia came fourth, sailing for the Sister Regina Primary School. Zoe Khodadin and Moriah Stewart sailed for the Seventh Day Adventist School and ended in third position. Isabelle and Charlotte van Holland Little sailed for the Sister Regina School and came in second position. And the win of this class was for the Sister Regina School as well, with Ayla Bus winning the fleet with all races won!

For the overall school trophies, the results of the 3 best performing boats per school were added and compared. Sister Regina Primary School came in third place.

Second place was for Learning Unlimited, who won the regatta the last 5 years, but this year Milton Peters College took the overall win. Congratulations to all participants.

The SMYC is thanking Domino’s Pizza for making this event a great success, we are looking forward to next year! Thanks to all volunteers that helped us out, the students for participating and the parents and schoolteachers for cheering them on!
