The 8th edition of the Domino’s Interschool Sailing Championship hosted by the Sint Maarten Yacht Club (SMYC) took place on Saturday, May 24, with a total of 68 sailors in 34 boats, representing 7 schools, competing in 5 races on Simpson Bay Lagoon.
“This year was again a great edition of the Domino’s Interschool Championship,” said Sam Peeks, Sailing Instructor at the SMYC. “With kids competing from our Youth Sailing Program and our Primary School Program, there was a lot of interest. We had so many sailors that we had to rotate some crews to get everyone on the water. Hopefully, next year we can grow again!” he continued.
The sailors represented the following schools: Sister Regina Primary School, Learning Unlimited, MPC, CIA, Victor Hugo, Leonard Connor Primary School, and a Homeschooled team.
The races started from the SMYC dock so that parents and spectators had front row seats to see the sailing competition. Four races were sailed in the morning with a fresh breeze getting the various classes quickly around the course.
Around lunchtime, all competitors returned to the SMYC dock for a well-deserved pizza lunch provided by Domino’s. After lunch, the kids sailed one more race in the afternoon.

In the ILCA Class, eight boats raced against each other. Melina De Vries took third place for MPC, Aiden Andrew Etwaroo came in second sailing for Victor Hugo, and Massimo Lapierre took the win for Victor Hugo.
The Optimist Class saw 10 competitors this year. Adilyn Treadwell, from homeschooling, finished in third position. Oskar Jarrett Versteegden finished in second position, sailing for Sister Regina. First place went to Nathan Sheppard, sailing for Victor Hugo.
For the third time in this regatta, the Sail Qube fleet was included. A Sail Qube is a plastic Optimist that is used by the SMYC to teach young and beginning sailors. This fleet consisted of six Qubes. Ashni Mahes finished in third place for Sister Regina, Harrison Radican came in second for Learning Unlimited, and Edinho Oehlers came in first position for Sister Regina.
In the RS Zest Fleet, five boats competed. Luke van Holland Little and Ekamjot Singh came in third, sailing for MPC. Clément Le Normand and Leo Joseph came in second place, sailing for Victor Hugo, and Mats van der Wel, Brian Fong and Ronin Taylor won the class, sailing for CIA.
The RS Quest Class saw five teams competing. Benjamin Koster, Luc Koster and Xam Hartgers came in third place, sailing for Sister Regina. Emilien Normand and Nicolas finished in second place, sailing for Victor Hugo. And Rio Stomp and Dax Henriquez won the championship, sailing for MPC.
In addition to the individual trophies, overall trophies for schools were awarded. For the overall school trophies, the results of the best-performing boats per school were added and compared. Victor Hugo won the Domino’s Championship.
