Sailability at the Sint Maarten Yacht Club
One of the goals of the Sint Maarten Yacht Club is to make sailing available for a broader audience, and our Sailability program does just that. Even when you have a physical or mental disability, participating in sports is crucial to building self-confidence and focus, and each student gets to learn at their own level based on their individual capabilities.
With a special boat designed for this purpose, called a RS Venture Connect, the SMYC launched their Sailability project in July 2023, funded by the World Trust Fund, with assistance from R4CR.
The RS Venture Connect is stable and safe, and with two seats facing forward, the students are able to be involved in the sailing to help develop their skills.
The SMYC collaborates with the White and Yellow Cross Care Foundation to get four selected students who are challenged with a mental or physical disability from their day-activity program to join these special sailing classes twice a week, starting in August 2023.
The SMYC is excited to establish and grow this program, to give more people the opportunity to sail and develop new skills.
